This is a very personal post today, I know that being comfortable and content is one thing but happiness is SO much more. Feeling ‘enough’ to receive anything is a struggle. To receive thanks, money, gratitude, compliments… name it.
I’ve already achieved much in my life but was it “My Way” or “Their Way”… enjoy!
“All my life, when I’m truly honest with myself I’ve always done the ‘right thing’ or ‘what’s expected.’ I passed high school well, I traveled for a year, I went to uni and graduated, got married, work hard, had kids, am a good mum and wife. I’m now 33 with 3 kids and although I’m content I do sometimes wonder what would life look like IF?”
I have struggled for years with anxiety. This was a rough piece to share but I felt it truly needed light, especially sitting front and centre at the time of another episode. I hope those who find this, find a little peace.
” it’s extremely ostracizing and deeply painful. I shy away from social interactions, being around people other than my family unit… sometimes even away from my family. “
“When you spend so much time in a negative head space, you outwardly research and glean examples of why something is 100% truth. When you’re in a positive mindset, the same is true, however it’s not detrimental to your own self. Your beliefs are an equation of
I forget how much the ocean opens up creativity for me. Sitting in it on the first day here, I had a few minutes to reflect on the past 12 months at Julie Clyde Creative and realised just how far I’ve come to date but also how far I still have to work on to continually grow and develop this incredible ‘ little business that could’. SO many times I threw this business into the trash, threw my hands in the air and simply gave up. SO. MANY. TIMES. Shouty text is for me to remind myself that was the last time.
It brought up some interesting conversations with my friend, Vanessa, who I’m travelling with. She owns and runs View It Do It which is an incredible live stream business out of Norfolk, Virginia, USA. She can take her high def cameras ANYWHERE in the world and live stream your big event globally.
As we contemplated the end of day one here, we got onto a few topics which had arisen as part of the conference we are here with. There had been some tension and frustrations voiced throughout the day, which I was working my best to not jump in and offer some suggestions. I realised how common these frustrations are and why they actually happen.
When you have an organisation, you need structure. Now whether or not that is a board of advisers for your sole trader or LLC which involes a few friends, your mum and the cat or whether its a small to large comany, having directors, CEO, COO, CFO and what works for your company are imperative.
There needs to be people in these positions who are leaders. They shouldn’t be there because they’re deemed the strongest personality, or appear always in control.
This is a general observation from many businesses I’ve had the pleasure of working with. The companies who thrive and work the best together have been the ones where the CEO works with EVERYONE around themselves. Yes, It’s their ultimate decision on many things, BUT, they are not making all the decisions based on their own thoughts, agenda, ideals and what they want out of it. Even my business starting out, I had my husband as a big sounding board and a few of my business friends with a couple of my non business friends to sound ideas off. They have grown to be imperative to my own decision making and success. A great and supportive team are imperative to any growth be it in life or business.
The second key to your business is not your logo. I’m sorry that’s NOT your branding. It’s your brand MARK but not your brand. Some graphic designers create the most spectacular logos and marks and I really enjoy scrolling through websites and imagery checking those out. While these are part of what you do, in order to have a clear cut message and direction for your business, it’s imperative to your success you have a brand developer come in and work one on one with you and your board to get your messaging spot on.
If you sell toilet paper for example, and it’s the softest, whitest, prettiest designed toilet paper but your messaging says you sell gift wrap, you’ll attract the wrong audience and create a muddled brand for both yourself and your prospective clients.
Recently, one of my brands and I were talking about their brands message and their tag line in particular. For me I know when a message hits home. It’s like a huge light that goes off in my head. He was talking about his photography work and what could he have has his tag (I adore his work so this was a total thrill for me to work with him on this). It started out with bringing nature inside and creating my passion to inspire you. Which don’t get me wrong are still nice, but when he started to tell his story a little more and spoke of what emotion it brings his clients that’s when the light bulb went on for us all. He said “My mum always tells me that my work ‘Puts you there’ so maybe Place you there?”
I was hosting a workshop at the time and every single attendee looked up from their work and literally yelled at him, OH YES! You HAVE got to check out his work over at Russell Pugh Photography. We are still happily working together and I cannot wait to see where his brand and clarity drives his amazing passion and creativity.
Vanessa from View It Do It, when we first started working together’s tag line was “Where Everyone Gets a Front Row Seat” Which in itself isn’t bad, BUT it didn’t allow her clients to understand what it was she did from the get go. She changed it after we had some long branding chats to “Stream You Big Day Live”. Instantly people understand what she does and she is thriving daily.
For your brand to be fully understood you tag line is important but its also your essence and substance behind what you do. It’s your mission and vision statements. Its your commitment statements, key words, colours, font selections, messaging throughout everything you do. This is my passion and being able to watch business men and women realise their message and potential it makes me incredibly inspired within myself. At the end of the day, my clients should be, must be, more successful than I am and if they’re not, then I’m not doing my job properly.
I just wanted to follow up on my last BLOG post with a few of my favourite images from Megan Hall’s branding shoot. She is vibrant, energetic and SO fun and hence the shoot was filled with laughter and light. I had an awesome time! Thank you for having me xxx
I know I’ve been writing a little lately about capturing an authentic brand for your business, or yourself in life. Your brand is WHO you are not what you are. That does help to know your what and why but the WHO is often the part that eludes us the most.
Megan Hall Motivation and I have been working together a lot recently to authentically brand her thriving business and getting to the WHO of what she does. It has been a journey for the both of us. Even though shes a kick arse motivational mindset coach and entrepreneur, I still managed to make her stop and think whilst we were developing her branding style guide. These guides need to speak to many different vendors who you work with in corporate life and for them to be able to truly ‘get’ your business and who you are.
Megan is my butterfly of life. She exudes bright, shiny happy light and an energy that is infectious. When I first met her I remember thinking, she’s my person. We WILL be friends. The second time we met I was able to talk to her much more and we hit it off. Now it feels like our friendship is centuries old and that we were never not friends. I love having those people in my life and I’m realising quickly that they are few and far between. However when I find them I keep them with all I have. They help ME to grow and help me realise that it’s safe to be me around them.
So this morning, after two reorganizations of our session due to sickness and hurricane Hermine, we met at 7am. I wanted her to feel safe, enabled to be herself, and to have fun and ignore the camera. In order to do this I need to be a clean slate and create a very open environment to ask questions from a place of no intention. To reflect back and feel how my client is in that moment.
I had my mentee and new addition to JCC (more to come soon!) Jossan Urban on location to enjoy and see how my shoots run. They are filled with love, laughter and a LOT of talking. It is a conversation between two or more people, via some glass (the camera).
Today is the first time I have welcomed my ‘client’ and anyone else back into my work space to look over the images as they are and talk about them all. Say ‘yes or no’ before my own personal cull. I am teaching Joss my version of how I work and want her to see how fun and enjoyable culling of images can be. Especially seeing real time expression while we shoot through to it being captured in a file on my screen.
I can’t show you all the images, but we certainly have a few silly out takes I would love to show you. There will be many many more to come, but for now I will share my favourite image from this morning of Megan in her genuine, smiley, authentic self… No cheese here!
And a couple of fun outtakes- which always happen :p
Megan, you have HUGE things ahead of you. You have an incredible team around you who are here to lift you up and support you, every step of the way. I love the way you love everyone around you, your heart and compassion. I respect that you don’t take rubbish from ANYONE and I strive to grow to be that way too. To my phenomenal friend, you ARE enough and I will find you every life, especially if it means we get to laugh as hard as we do. Here’s to a huge future, love, laughter and hilarity ahead.
Always be you.
Dear Jesh De Rox, (Creator of Moment Design, gentle soul and awesome mentor)
I write to you today to thank you. Thank you for stepping out far beyond the ‘conventional’ to create, inspire and empower those around you. Thank you for being inquisitive enough to research and search for why your clients rocked some sessions and not others. Thank you for being the first to see a vision and then sharing that vision so the rest of us would be able to share that passion and vision with others. Your education and love is incredible. May you continue to grow and follow your whimsy.
I am re-certifying myself with the updated and new Beloved Movement which is growing into Moment Design. I have been so fortunate in my photography career by being introduced to beloved in its early days so I was able to utilize the skills and grow with them. I was asked to re-certify with Moment Design just after the Modern Femme Conference in May. Me being me, couldn’t wait to sign on so I did.
With the amount of things going on for me at that time, there were many many late nights followed by days jam packed full of kids, planning, creating, painting, educating and household tasks. I think I may have been slightly crazy but I completed everything!
The weeks flew by and it was SO great revisiting so much of what I had learned previously and hearing new content for the first time too.
At the end of the course, we were asked to put into real time use what we had learned to date.
I put out a model call on my business page and had a few game responders. Joss & Tyler were the two who were able to do the ‘pre-work’, be there on the day we planned and were willing to come open and ready to experience something very very new and different.
I gave them their homework and waited for the day.
As it came around to 5pm, our sunny bright and gorgeous day turned into the darkest, rain storm ever. I called Noah and asked him if he had been building an arc lately it was so bad.
We rescheduled (with much apologizing for my homework being eaten by the torrential rain) and we re shot the following Wednesday.
I am SO glad we waited.
Taking a couple through a photographic session like this is physically and emotionally impact-full for all involved. You have to be careful to warm them up, work with them and remain completely open yourself or you can lose every last ounce of work you put into their session up to that point. I felt Tyler blocking me a couple of times but with some gentle encouraging and a whole lot of laughter we progressed.
I had THE hardest time culling their images down after their session. Each one had ‘something’ I wanted to sit and stare at or giggle at, but I know the rules and that can’t happen haha. Moment Design is so fitting for what this is all about. Designing beautiful, authentic, genuine, loving, laughter filled moments with two beautiful souls.
Thank you 1000000000000 times for allowing me into your relationship for an hour and showing me around your love. It is truly an honor and I’m even more grateful for the friendship and love you share with our family.
Here’s to many more shoots together and far more glasses of red afterwards!
There’s something to be said about growing and working on one’s self. Some people will say it’s a load of crap while others just nod and give you that ‘I understand what you’re talking about’ look. I have been consciously working on myself now for a good 6 solid months not so critically but three months intensively. Really getting down to the core of who I am and what I do.
I have had the joy of speaking with many business people and life coaches who have all shared really great content with me about themselves and their lives. The majority of which has been so inspiring and awakening for me I will never be able to explain or thank them enough… may just nod that knowing nod next time we meet. Just picture that nod with the biggest smiling face and that’ll be me. It’s not easy, there are some really hard, lonely feeling days but when you have a tribe around you of people who uplift and inspire you to keep stepping up and out of the flames towards the light, there really is a great sense of accomplishment looking back to where you came from.
Why am I talking about this today? Because life is about who you are, and what you do. Which is essentially a brand. What is YOUR brand?
NO, I don’t mean your logo. As I was educated about the difference last night I want to share it with you today. A logo you can buy fairly cheaply and doesn’t always have any substance or meaning behind it. What I’m talking about it your BRAND. Who are you as a person and what do you do in life? Work? Business? The world? I’m continually realizing and growing my brand, but I’m at a place now where I know the direction and the pieces are being created around the goals, intentions and future direction. Your brand has been tailored and created around your core values, beliefs and what you do and who you are. Don’t believe me? Look at the BIG companies in life and their brand- their beliefs and core values are so often represented in their graphic and their wording of what they do. Apple being a prime example. Knowing they sell computers is one thing, but coming from a place of delivering a beautifully designed product that is easy to use and one that challenges the status quo. Who would have thought you’d be purchasing Phones, music devices and watches from a computer company. They are selling more than just computers, it’s a belief as well.
I am Julie Clyde and I own and adore, Julie Clyde Creative. I am a business who Creates, Inspires and Empowers women through what I create and experiences that those women have with me through our time together.
I help new and existing female entrepreneurs to brand their business through their branding, colours, typeface and also their imagery. I photograph women as their most authentic self and add substance and depth to what they do by creating a brand that is truest to who they are both as a woman and entrepreneur.
What separates me from other designers and creatives? I work intuitively and lovingly with my clients. We get to know each other inside out and form friendships through our business together. I don’t take on all jobs that come my way, for two reasons. If I already have my graphic schedule filled, or if I don’t sense the work would be right for me. I would rather state after our first consultation that the work isn’t quite right for my skills, which I think is important to any brand.
I am really looking forward to putting together branding documents and forming incredible brands with my fellow femmes. A lot of the areas of the business are in re-formation right now but I’m really loving the new journey of this path and will continue to grow my paths and directions in life.
I woke this morning to a Facebook FILLED with death, shootings, war, violence and saddness. It got me thinking. If this cycle continues without people standing strong, united as one, it will never change. Change is hard, undoubtedly but in this instance doing nothing is far worse for everyone involved. For us as a race.
People are people where I’m from. Race, religion and labels don’t matter so much. If this world continues down the path of fueled fear, our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and children will soon be ghosts of time and circumstance. How many people are we willing to lose before we truly get it? How many black armbands, graves dug, hospitalizations from wounds do we need before we wake up and take some positive action?
This subject is truly taboo and I know how sensitive it is right now. Our leaders aren’t calling for love, peace or helping us see that we are all human and deserve the right to be treated equally. No. Worldwide there is a fear campaign in place to hate your neighbour- fear someone who doesn’t look like the person in the mirror. I am making an effort to smile at strangers, create conversations with people I have yet to meet and NOT post the negative that is all over our social media pages.
As an artist I feel that I CAN make a difference. I can use my art to shake, stimulate and start the train of thought. Why can we not be positive, why can we not induce the changes we wish to see?
This image was created today after a long consideration on what I had witnessed today onilne. It’s called “Ghosts of War”
You can’t see them but there are 9 ghosts in this image, two ruined buildings, a dragonfly (which I promise you wont see him) and a helicopter. “Ghosts of War” was created today and I think it had a great deal to do with my Facebook feed. I tend to absorb life and what’s going on and this was on everyone’s lips today. We are fighting wars with each other, with strangers and all fueled by fear.
I realized a few things after my business launch. 3)I have some really awesome supporters of my work. 2) I really need to write down my speeches or I forget everything I hoped to say when I stand in front of my friends 1) I’m REALLY good at self sabotage due to my upper limit issues.
As I sat down on the evening of July 4th and reflected on our crazy weekend I realized that by knowing where I was at physically was no where near my emotional or brain space. Who knew you could be in three places at once!
I had picked a fight the evening before with hubby and was feeling preeeeety crappy about myself for no apparent reason. THANKFULLY I am reading an awesome book right now and realized after some reflection that indeed my ‘upper limitations’ were alive and kicking me around. Taking myself to hubs and apologizing he got me talking more about it. I had no idea that something that makes me so incredibly happy to do and produce would also be a direct to my biggest downfall- I didn’t feel like I DESERVED the success I had. I didn’t FEEL that I was worthy of people showing up and supporting me and my passion. I got to wondering just how many other women and men go through this?
I very quickly had a building feeling in me that I needed to get out. A friend sent me an image of a public statue in Brooklyn NY which sent shock waves through my mind. With a great deal of work and tweaking “Out of the Fire” was produced.
This DreamScape is DEFINITELY being printed for my own office to remind me that out of the fire phoenix are reborn, coal is made and from there so are diamonds. In a round about, Julie kind of thinking, way.
This piece is probably not the last to cross my path but it’s definitely a stepping stone for me to remember I AM worthy. I am talented and skilled and all those other words I cannot say out loud some days.
I am a multitude of things but, I am incredibly imperfect in my own perfect kind of way.
I love you heaps,
Out of the flames: Let me ask you, what is wrong with lifting yourself up from your circumstances to chase your dreams? Why do we allow ourselves to prevent our being better, stronger and more abundant? It’s a rough few steps but they’re worth taking. Lift yourself out of your comfort and ride towards your zone of genius. Be who you were put on this earth to be, and love the life you have to live. Stop allowing yourself to feel others doubts, words and limitations and rise up. RISE UP!! Today, tomorrow and the future is YOURS. No one elses.
