Graphic Design, and creating for me is very personal. Some things inspire creativity in me and some things don’t, and both are ok. Some jobs I take on and others I do have to pass along. I make sure I send out a special questionnaire to understand what the client is thinking about/wanting but also it’s a tool to get to know that client based on a few generalized questions and this does help me get a feel for if the project is well suited or not.
When Megan came to me about her branding, she had JUST started her motivational speaking and coaching business. We had both attended Modern Femme Conference 2016 and had hit it off from her first “Hi I’m Megan!”. She was so bright and cheerful and she was a person I WANTED to know better. She agreed and the rest is history.
So we talked over breakfast about what drove her, colours she loved, styles and general life stuff and I knew I wanted to create something pretty amazing for her.Just had no clue what that was.
I told her that sometimes I will have an inspiration come at me and sometimes it took a few weeks but I was working on it.
I tried one day in the middle to very unsuccessfully ‘make’ something and left it. The past two weeks I’ve had some inspiration pop in and out of my head but today it hit me like a tonne of bricks and I had to get it onto paper.
I love working with women. Women in business inspire so much in me that to be given opportunities to design, photograph and brand their business- no matter how far along they are is such a gift. I know I say it’s an honour and pleasure but it really lights a fire within me, especially when I get ‘it’ right.
With the Megan Hall Motivation logo and branding, I wasn’t given any specific shapes or ideas for the actual final design but this is how this particular design came about.
I had a couple of one on one consultations with her and made sure I was surrounded by her business as much as I possibly could be. I watch her speaking in her facebook live presentations each day, I subscribe to her newsletter and we’ve hung out together too (that was not business for the record!). I was able to step inside the world of “Megan” and really understand where she is at with her brand.
Megan loves hot pink and mint for colours so we began by creating a custom colour palette specifically for her. I felt solid colors were too much for her branding as she’s not a harsh, hard, or abrasive person or brand so I went with a watercolor blend instead and scanned it into my computer to use. Water colours to me spread and ebb over a page and I love that they create shades and light within a brush stroke.
The beauty of mixing traditional techniques with modern software is I was able to match Megan’s selected colours effortlessly.
The shape of the logo itself is a silhouette of a tree.
I didn’t want an obvious image or literal translation to what I felt about her brand, but I still wanted something that would hold meaning each time Megan saw her brand.
After getting to know Megan Hall Motivation I realised she speaks of motivating women and is amazing at what she does, but what I feel she is doing, is more about growing women, strengthening them and nurturing them to grow into amazing humans.
Great trees don’t grow without feeding, watering or some form of love, and they show their journeys in the way they grow. The oldest trees have weathered huge storms, droughts and sometimes harsh conditions to grow into something we often shelter under in our own times of need.
Megan, it was such a great pleasure and honor to have created this piece for your business. I won’t stop watching your daily videos anytime soon, they’re amazing and inspire me to do better every day. You are a force and are growing in a beautiful direction- especially after weathering some hard times of your own. Continue to inspire and love those who come to your light.
